Joka's Dirty Laundry vs Vastrapur Luncheons

When a group of students from different institutes meet :

A guy/girl from IIT will say he's from IIT. S/he'll briefly make fun of Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati or whichever IIT s/he is NOT from and then move on to bond with them over the price of onions, the lack of academic research or the school systems in California and costs of private tuition.

A guy/girl from IIM A/B/C will immediately launch into the finer nuances of the differences between IIM A/B/C on topics ranging from architecture to the quality of friday night mess food, the alcohol laws of Gujarat, Banglore's infrastructure and the latest b-school rankings.

Just a thought in response to Ms Bansal's frivolous comments on Joka's infrastructure. (No i will not post a link)

This post was written a few days ago, before i went to bombay. But had a few second thoughts about posting it then, so just saved it as a draft.

Now its back.

Way to go.
That post was slightly uncalled for on Ms. Bansal's part

Yes, I don't usually say college either... I say local engineering college, which IS true and which seems to satisfy people enough :)

oh, you said they WILL say they're from IIT??? Oh sorry, exception to the rule then :)

The only reason I can think its not happening is that the general student populace just doesnt interact enough!!

We, at IIMC, have a long standing (to die for kinds) rivalry with XLRI. However, the best friends for many of us are also from the same school just cause come rain or high water, we 'interact' with each other once an year!! We know the ppl on other side to be the same humans as we are which helps bonding much faster than with other b-school grads.

And then take the IITs, from inter IIT sports meets to plenty of other inter-IIT interactions, they increase interaction between students from other schools. Net result, everyone has much better understanding and respect of students from other IITs.

This is much different from the settings of A/B/C where we either meet at internships/jobs or with a rare chance at one or the other bschool contests. In all probability, the first time we meet is after completing our PGPs and have already some predeveloped notions of how ppl from other IIMs would be. And that does rule out a fair bit of bonding.

Chalo maine baithe baithe hypothesis bana diya... now u go on and test it.

while raven has a point, i dont agree that interaction is necessary to prevent unhealthy competition. most iitians dont visit or meet with other iit students till their internship or after passing out. the main reason is how the brand is created, IIT is a single brand(excepting G and R) whereas IIMs A/B/C are separate ones. Unless this changes the competition will continue.

Competition may not nec. be a bad thing. But I guess it comes about mostly because we are all vying for those ten spots with a recruiter and hence seek to differentiate ourselves strongly. This leads to the inevitable comparisons and bashing up of another IIM.

When I was trying to decide A vs B etc I heard a lot of this 'brand building' from the younger campus.

Its a democracy after all. Isnt it Suze, what difference does it make, if some one says some thing is good or bad as long as he/she is the some one who matters. It tookme all day tday to get the summary of your life after school. I have a feeling you are preparing a draft version of your auto-biography. Great people dont have time to write auto-biographies later in their life or do they? Its a rendezvous that will make me happy.
