Down Memory Lane

This is a Tag that was left in the comments to an earlier post. As you can see its 4 am and I don't have much to do. So here goes!

What were you doing..

Eleven Years Ago
It was 1995. I was 12 years old. I had spent my winter break in London and Paris and was over the moon about it. I'd spent months reading about everything in both cities what to find in Madame Tussauds and what to order at Berthillons.

I was in the 7th standard and used to play tennis on weekends. I was averaging I think two to three books per week and used to devour science fiction (mostly Asimov). I was living in a huge apartment complex with a large bunch of friends and we used to go rollerskating, cycling, swimming and play tennis/cricket.

I twisted my wrist the first time I tried to catch a ball. I realized that cricket was not my sport. I had got a chemistry set as a gift and I and Divya tried to make soap in my balcony while our parents worried that we'd burn the building down.

I was listening to Backstreet Boys (!$#%) and was an earnest Girl Guide. I had really long hair (Think waist length) and used to wear it in two pigtails with white ribbons. I was class monitor, and truly - quite a geek!

Five Years Ago
It was 2001. I was writing my 12th board exams. Was nervous about getting into a good engineering college after school. I look at my sister and cousins these days and realize that I was quite clueless back then. I somehow coasted along and got into a good college and had four awesome years there!

Last Year
Was going to Banglore every second week to attend interviews. Agonized over which institute to pick etc. Was busy preparing for GD/PIs and getting a lot of gyaan from seniors :-)

Yesterday
Had a 4000 word submission for my WAC (Written Analysis and Communication)course. Worked on it all night and all morning. Finally finished and submitted with ten minutes to spare. Slept all evening and missed 2 meetings. Had a 'ramp' in the night and danced for hours. Saw Munich and didn't like it as much as I expected to.

If you read this tag and smiled, or thought about what you were doing 11/6/1 year ago, leave a comment or blog about it on yours. And leave a link.

Cheers and Happy Reminiscing!

11 years ago (coincidentally 1995 :) )
I was a mischevious 13 year old ejoying his sojourn at Ranikhet where my father's regiment was posted. Ranikhet literally means 'Fields of the Queen' and is called so because Rani Padmini, fell in love with this place and decided never to leave.

What I remember are my days at school, 8th class - my first bunk. Strolling away with friends to a snack bar (sounds cool, though it was one of the usual chai/snack walla place), and the mesmerizing view of the snow capped himalayan peaks, shawl making factory near my school , terrace farming , trekking, taekwondo lessons, the narrow lanes of the market, my dog, car driving lessons, the army golf course and Dad's rush to get there, my friends hotel; nafisa, dani, kartikey

5 years ago (coincidentally 2001 :) )
I was in my second year at engineering college staying at Army Boys Hostel. Settling down in Delhi, the awful bus rides to college.. the golf putting in the hostel garden one day before the exam, the pranks , the ragging, the frivoity, the bakar, the movies, harsil trek, badminton till 2 am ..

Last year :
Interviews were on, shunting btw lko and del, roopal di's excitment on advising NDTV on the budget analysis and our dissection of the budget

Yesterday :
Wondering what to do for the perennial exams. End terms start tom and every time I wonder that it cant get any worse the system surprises me, thr first drizzle of the year, missing mo...

~Thanks Sujatha

11 years ago - going mad over a certain game called cricket.Playing for club junior teams in state cricket organisation orgaised league teams. Watching live telecasts and reruns with equal excitement.
Trying to adjust to life after sudden loss of parents. Learning the importance of people. Lying to my cancer stricken grandmother about my parents death.
Watching stupid programmes on television. Wasting the rest of my time in school.

5 years ago - Adjusting to a new school. Trying to fathom why I am pretending that I want to be an engineer. Trying to figure out which one of the beautiful girls from the humanities section should I hit on. Hoping to become the school cricket team captain.
Besides that entering into a shell of silence amd contemplation where I would stay for the better part of the next two years.
Still watching stupid shows on television. Also wondering why I have never bought music cassette or CD ever.

1 year ago - Wondering why I am trying to get through the interviews for the IIM programmes. What will I do with the six interview calls.
Realising that I am going to miss my college life always. That they were the best days in my life. Wasting some more time in college. Preparing for IIM interviews by spending 10 hours in my college canteen everytime there was an interview the next day.

1 day ago - WACing. Stayed up the night preparing the report. Spent the morning completing my part and fine tuning it. Spent the afternoon trying to tie together the work done by the rest of the team. Finaly managing to submit the report 5 minutes before time. Still no WAC run :-(

I did smile...so here you go...

11 years ago, I was budding nerd
maybe not exactly, for want of a better word
but life was free, i loved that time
I had my fun, it was sublime
Peaceful and content, I was a little bird

5 years ago, was the midst of crazy years
Engineering had been chosen, exams were the fears
But friends were life, life was my friend
And every newer pal, was just my kinda blend
I never even realised, when I changed the gears

1 year ago, I was ending a phase
whether with a hurrah, or a fall from grace
But MBA had me hooked, I was again a geek
Into my unsure future, I was attemoting a peek
I passed out of IIM, with a smiling face

Yesterday, I trudged back home, in a foreign land
I munched into my burger, and stared into my hand
Not sure if my future, is written in that line
Not sure if I want to know, this way I am just fine
If this is how it all works out, I'd rather go unplanned

I smiled...

11 years ago:
Was in a small town in Andhra, in 8th standard, knowing little that in a matter of months I would be in the big bad world of Madras (until it was sadly renamed Chennai).

6 years ago:
Devastated I couldn't make it into evn MSc Physics in BITS.. Cursing the system for being unfair to CBSE students.. Regretting to have to study in Crescent..Enjoying long bus rides on PP21, sometimes on the footboard :-) Taking pride in my immune system after "Sundal Samosa" and Paneer Soda on the roadside could do nothing to it. Generally carefree life..

1 year ago:
Deciding software job was not for me.. Deciding to take a leap of faith and pursue a research career.. Got to Gainesville and been enjoying it ever since..

Yesterday:
Mugging for the PhD Qualifying exam.. Spent $10 in India store buying frozen paratha, and masala dosa.. Roomie came back from India... Devoured sweets and savouries...

Bg,

Placements are currently underway at IIMA. And we can't confirm figures, numbers recruited until the entire process is completed. Obviously its an exciting time as our seniors are getting some great offers - but the whole process is expected to go on for a few more days! :)
